Course Topics

Module 1: Scaling Accessibility: Starts With Hearts and Minds

In this module, the presenter introduces the 'Do 1 Thing' strategy to demystify the process for embracing accessibility, emphasizing simplicity, changing hearts and minds, and identifying those ‘influencer’ stakeholders and areas of business. The aim is to not only highlight the practical aspects of scaling accessibility but also emphasize the softer elements such as leadership and culture, which are often the backbone of any successful organizational change.

Module 2: Creating A Sustainable Accessibility Program

In this module, the presenters look at the involvement of executive sponsors, and legal and compliance teams in defining processes around Accessibility. There is an overview of the teams required at each step of the software development lifecycle and what their contributions are to accessibility at each stage, as well as an examination of setting up Accessibility policy and processes.

Module 3: Using A Risk Management Lens To Manage Accessibility At Scale

This module looks at how business planning and risk management practices can be used to guide decisions on where and how to focus accessibility activities. It will introduce the 4 R model – Risk, Rank, Replicate, Roadmap – to plan for and help measure accessibility improvements while drawing on examples and best practices from public sector, universities, and the financial industry.

Module 4: Driving a Human-centered Accessibility Transformation

In this module, the presenters discussed how they introduced a human-centered accessibility approach into their product teams to help implement accessibility solutions. They share how they worked with teams to meet them where they are and take small, iterative steps towards adopting a culture of accessibility and inclusion. Strategies included monitoring of products towards meeting accessibility requirements as well as working with the teams on upskilling to create accessibility champions and drive adoption.

Module 5: Cultivating Accessible Cultures in Associations

Cultivating cultural change within an association organization requires both concrete actions to support accessibility norms and intentional outreach to association members to facilitate collective responsibility for accessibility. This journey relies on knowledge informed collaboratively and communally by disability, Deaf, Autistic, spoonie, and accessibility cultures. This module focuses on centering disabled people and people with access needs, strengthening allyship, and moving beyond compliance-based understandings of accessibility, disability, and disability-adjacent categories.
